When Holger was only about eight years old, Skellige pirates noticed him floating in the middle of sunken ship wreckage. He was dehydrated, unconscious, and with no memories; By the looks of his tattered but fancy garments, he should have been a descendant of a noble family. Pirates took a course to the nearest port anticipating a hefty reward, but nobody heard about the missing noble family or a ship. The kid had nowhere to go, and the crew liked him for his wit and courage. They decided that eventually, he would become a valuable addition to their team, so he became a pirate.

After about ten lucky years of piracy, their ship was caught up and sunken by Nilfgaardian imperial galleys. And, once again, but not for the last time, Holger found himself floating in the sea, with an arrow in his back, somewhere near Verden shores. First time in his life, Holger remembered how to pray, and he prayed for his life.

The next time he opened his eyes, some tattooed she-elf was dragging him on a shore. She was going to rob him like other beached corpses but ended up saving his life.
